Over the course of late March and April the proposed Sign Code went in front of the Planning and Environmental Commission for review. Through these meetings, a number of changes to the proposed Sign Code were made. These included retaining additional signage for movie theaters, allowing a construction sign at each construction site entrance, reducing construction signage allowances to 8 square feet per sign, and reducing temporary signage allowances to 1 sign at 3 square feet for 14 days out of a year. Please see the updated Vail Sign Code Rough Draft for more detail.
Additionally, in April, the Sign Code was reviewed by the Design Review Board in a work session. The main outcome of this meeting was a desire to clarify the DRB’s ability to regulate signage textural qualities such as the extent of lettering projection.
The final ordinance for the Sign Code will be presented to the Vail Town Council for the first reading on May 18, 2021.
This meeting was recorded on October, 1st. Thank you to everyone who participated in these engagement meetings! Town staff will now work on creating a rough draft of the new sign code to present to the DRB, PEC and TC. Stay tuned to this site for the official date of these board and council meetings.

The first of these meetings will be held at noon on September 29, while the second meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on October 1. These meetings will be identical in content and are intended to provide the community at large an opportunity to share their input on the proposed changes to the Town of Vail Sign Code. The meetings will begin with a presentation on the proposed Sign Code changes, which will include feedback gathered from the Primary Stakeholder Engagement Meeting, and will conclude with a Q&A where citizens can share their feedback.

The Town of Vail Community Development Department will soon be seeking input from the business community on an update to the Sign Code in Title 11 of the Vail Town Code. Changes are needed to address removal of content-related requirements as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Reed vs Town of Gilbert. The scope of the update is not intended to include increasing sizes, locations or manner of display, but will address the way certain signs are regulated and classified. As envisioned, the code update will not require businesses to change how they currently use signage but may allow for more opportunity to creatively display information on the signage allowed.
The town will host an online public stakeholder meeting the weeks of Sept. 21 and Sept. 28. Please visit our EngageVail.com site for information on this project along with an invite to the primary stakeholder meeting.
