Economics and Housing

Economic & Planning Systems (EPS) will lead the economic issues and housing analyses. This analysis will determine how businesses are doing and how well West Vail commercial development serves the needs of current and future residents and visitors. Further analysis and outreach will also explore potential solutions to housing issues and affordable housing opportunities. The economics and housing planning efforts will include the following:

  • Analysis of the existing conditions around demographics and housing, including short-term rentals.
  • Analysis of business and economic conditions through an inventory of existing businesses and the evaluation of trends in business performance.
  • Identification of resident and guest preferences for new business types and potential locations.
  • Meetings with key business representatives to hear input on topics such as business expansion and retention needs, real estate constraints, the customer base, and other relevant issues.
  • Meetings with key property owners to hear input on opportunities for repositioning commercial districts, creating housing, expanding the bed base, and their vision for their holdings.
  • A public workshop to examine issues and opportunities related to housing, review the findings of the plan housing analysis, select appropriate housing types for West Vail, and brainstorm appropriate housing policies.
  • Development of action steps and cost estimates for all recommendations and ideas for economic development and housing elements of the plan.
  • Additional discussion and strategy on financing options and recommendations for greater public and public-private investments in West Vail.

The results of the initial analyses and assessments will be posted here. Later on, potential housing types and other recommendations will be posted here for your feedback.
